Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago as a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, which means “to unite” the spirit of the mind and physical body together. As yoga’s popularity spread from India throughout the world, it has evolved and transformed into many different forms, styles, and intensities.  Today, over 20 million people in the United States and more than 250 million people across the globe practice yoga!

Yoga can be practiced by anyone, anywhere. Whether you’re old or young, strong or weak, healthy or sick, flexible or tight – there is a yoga style that is right for you. A common myth about yoga is that it is simply stretching. While stretching is a big part, yoga is about creating balance physically and mentally. Among many other benefits, yoga increases strength and improves flexibility through asanas (postures or poses) and pranayama (breath work). Each asana has very specific physical and mental benefits while pranayama is what guides and moves you through each asana.

Some of the benefits of yoga include:

  • Stress Relief
  • Pain Relief
  • Injury Prevention
  • Increased Strength
  • Improved Circulation
  • Improved Breathing
  • Increased Flexibility
  • Detoxification
  • Weight Management
  • Muscle Toning
  • Cardiovascular Conditioning
  • Centering/Being more Present
  • Inner Peace

After almost a full year of a friend consistently asking me to try yoga I finally decided to give it a go. My initial intent was to go once to appease my friend and be done with it; I had another thing coming. As a long-time endurance athlete I’ve grown to love a challenge and the sense of accomplishment that comes with completion. Yoga not only offered me the same sense of achievement (spoiler alert: it’s hard!) but it also put me in a more relaxed state of mind. Since my first class at Studio Oxygen I’ve been hooked, attending three classes a week and often practicing at home. I still maintain my normal training regiment, however, yoga has become the perfect offset and counterweight to all my normal training. I couldn’t ask for a more welcoming, friendly studio than Studio Oxygen!
